This is a set of three Experimental Safety Vehicles (ESV) from 1972. The development of these ESVs was commissioned by the original act that created the Department of Transportation (DOT) in 1966. ESVs are meant to show the state of the art of vehicle safety and innovations that may be included in future vehicles. These three vehicles were developed by three companies - General Motors, Fairchild, and American Machine & Foundry Co. (AMF).

Many of the innovations shown in these vehicles proved impractical for various reasons, and were never implemented. For instance, the GM ESV had a padded panel about two feet thick positioned directly in front of the rear seat.
