Airbag Timeline

The airbag timelines apply to United States market vehicles.

The 1984 model year marked the first time* that a driver airbag was available on a vehicle in the United States, the Mercedes S-Class. By 1999, all new vehicles sold in the United States had dual airbags. Looking for a vehicle made between 1984 and 1998? Check here to see if it has frontal airbags.

*(In 1974-1976, a dual airbag system was available on some full-size GM cars; however, it was designed to replace the seat belt, not supplement it, and was the only airbag system designed to this ideal).
