The Accord was launched in 1976, but it wasn't until the second generation (1982) that the vehicle was crash tested. Judging by the very poor performances of the late '70s Civics and Preludes, it's likely that the 1976-81 Accord would be a poor performer. That said, the record we do have starts in 1982.
The 1982-85 Accord's crash test performance is excellent, with injury measures that best most cars twenty years younger, and is the best result for the Accord until 2003.
From there, the performance backslides into the 4-star range with the 1986-89 generation.
The next generation of Accord (1990-93) was tested three times - in '91 with no airbag, in '92 with a driver bag, and in '93 with dual bags. All got 4 stars for the driver; interestingly, the '91 and '92 got 5 stars for the passenger, while the '93, with a passenger airbag, got 4 stars.
The 1994-97 generation was a setback on performance; the driver maintained 4 stars, while the passenger only received 3 (the only 3-star performance in the Accord's history).
Evolutionary improvement was made with the 1998-2002 generation; the driver got 4 stars on 1998-2000 models and 5 for 2001-2002, while the passenger stayed at 4 stars for the entire generation.
The 2003-2007 models finally saw the Accord score that elusive double 5 star rating.
The 2008-2010 models further improved on that excellent performance.
