IIHS Crash Test Timeline

This is IIHS Crash Test Timeline, where I'll be breaking down how many of each type of test IIHS performed every year from 1995 - 2016. There is a small possibility that some 2016 tests have not been released yet as of September 2017.

The tests covered are for crash tests (frontal offset, side impact and small overlap) that were released to consumers and graded on the IIHS' grading scale.

Roof strength tests are not included because they are not a crash test; a weight is pushed onto a vehicle's roof until 5 inches of crush. Rear impact tests are not included because a vehicle doesn't get damaged; a seat is taken out and tested on a "sled", simulating the forces of a rear impact. Bumper, headlight, child seat, etc for obvious reasons. I will analyze these separately at a future date.

The tests are shown by calendar year that the test was performed, and not by model year. For instance, a test performed in 1995 on a 1996 vehicle and released in 1996 would count for 1995. The final "number" (e.g. CF00034) of the year may not be the final test, as some numbers were skipped for reasons that I do not know.

Frontal Offset (Moderate Overlap):

1995: 18
1996: 19
1997: 20
1998: 22
1999: 25
2000: 27
2001: 29
2002: 23
2003: 25
2004: 19
2005: 29
2006: 15
2007: 26
2008: 24
2009: 15
2010: 11
2011: 9
2012: 7
2013: 8
2014: 6
2015: 3
2016: 11

This type of test peaked in the 2000s; frontal crash test verification, launched in 2006, allows manufacturers to test redesigned vehicles themselves and send the results to IIHS if the previous version of said vehicle rated good. As virtually all vehicles today earn a rating of good in this 22-year-old test, IIHS has shifted its crash testing efforts to side impacts and later small overlap testing.

Side Impact:

2002: 2
2003: 20
2004: 30
2005: 34
2006: 42
2007: 48
2008: 54
2009: 34
2010: 18
2011: 17
2012: 9
2013: 11
2014: 6
2015: 6
2016: 15

The heyday of side impact testing was the late 2000s, with more than one test being done a week in 2008. Since the introduction of side crash test verification in 2010, the number has dropped like a rock.

Small Overlap Frontal:

2012: 37
2013: 49
2014: 51
2015: 43
2016: 38

This test is still fairly new, and test numbers have remained high.

2001: 29
2002: 25
2003: 45
2004: 49
2005: 63
2006: 57
2007: 74
2008: 78
