Airbag Timeline: SUVs

If this chart were concerning vehicles of this decade, I would have had to split it, due to the proliferation of crossover SUVs from around 2000 to the present day. SUVs were still largely considered utilitarian vehicles in the 1990s, although this was very much an era of transition with the first crossover models coming out and SUVs in general becoming more civilized for everyday use.

Airbag adoption started late for SUVs: the first SUV with an airbag was the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which remained the lone vehicle with an airbag for that year. After that, the pace picked up quickly. Most models that made the transition jumped straight from no airbags to dual airbags. By spring 1996, all SUVs on the market had at least one airbag.

The Land Rover Defender returned for 1997 still airbagless, but good luck finding one today for less than $50,000, and as a pure off-road vehicle, it did not compete with most of the SUVs on this list.
