Safety Comparison: Camry vs. Accord - Part 2, 1998-

 1998

Camry: 42.2 points (39.2 - 48.2)

Accord: 39.8 points (37.8 - 42.8)

Winner: Camry

The Accord's '98 redesign gave it a safety boost, but the Camry came in with optional side airbags and a better-designed passenger airbag to help it maintain the lead.

1999

Camry: 42.2 points (39.2 - 48.2)

Accord: 39.8 points (37.8 - 42.8)

Winner: Camry

See 1998.

2000

Camry: 42.2 points (39.2 - 48.2)

Accord: 40.8 points (37.8 - 46.8)

Winner: Camry, slightly

The Accord gets optional side airbags for 2000, boosting its score slightly, though the Camry maintained the lead.

2001

Camry: 42.2 points (39.2 - 48.2)

Accord: 42.8 points (39.8 - 48.8)

Winner: Accord, slightly

NHTSA retested the Accord in its full-frontal crash test for 2001, and it earned 5 stars for both occupants (instead of the previous 4), edging it slightly ahead of the Camry.

2002

Camry: 50.4 points (41.4 - 74.4)

Accord: 42.8 points (39.8 - 48.8)

Winner: Camry

The Camry was redesigned this year, adding a myriad of optional safety equipment: side and curtain airbags, ABS, and stability control were all optional. Check all the safety option boxes, and the '02 Camry routs any '02 Accord with over 74 points!

2003

Camry: 51.4 points (42.4 - 75.4)

Accord: 54.4 points (51.4 - 67.4)

Winner: Accord (fully-optioned Camry overall)

The Accord got a redesign this year, improving from an Acceptable to Good IIHS moderate overlap rating, making ABS standard, and offering side and curtain airbags. However, the big safety winner this year is the fully-optioned Camry. While the Accord is a more crashworthy vehicle, the stability control puts the fully-optioned Camry over the top.

2004

Camry: 50.2 points (41.2 - 74.8)

Accord: 54.4 points (51.4 - 68.4)

Winner: Accord (fully-optioned Camry overall)

The Camry slightly backslid on NHTSA crash test results for 2004.

2005

Camry: 56.2 points (49.2 - 76.2)

Accord: 67.8 points

Winner: Accord (fully-optioned Camry overall)

The Accord made its side airbags standard this year, meaning that there were no safety options - every Accord, from DX to EX-L, has the same score of about 68 points. The Camry beats the Accord only with all safety options.

2006

Camry: 56.2 points (49.2 - 76.2)

Accord: 71.8 points (67.8 - 77.8)

Winner: Accord

For 2006, Honda began offering stability control on the Accord, making a stability control-equipped Accord the safest of the two this year at nearly 78 points.

2007

Camry: 76.0 points (72.0 - 82.0)

Accord: 71.8 points (67.8 - 77.8)

Winner: Camry

The Camry was redesigned for 2007, earning generally good crash test results. Stability control remained the only major safety option.

2008

Camry: 76.0 points (73.0 - 83.0)

Accord: 94.8 points

Winner: Accord

The 8th generation Accord was nothing short of a knockout punch in safety when it came out for the 2008 model year. Crash test results were close to perfect, and stability control was standard. Every bit of this Accord's safety came at the base price.

2009

Camry: 76.0 points (72.0 - 82.0)

Accord: 94.8 points

Winner: Accord

See 2008.

2010

Camry: 82.0 points

Accord: 94.8 points

Winner: Accord

The Camry got standard stability control for 2010, bumping up its overall score.

2011

Camry: 82.0 points

Accord: 96.0 points

Winner: Accord

The Accord's 2011 refresh brought with it a better NHTSA rear side impact rating.

2012

Camry: 94.0 points

Accord: 97.0 points

Winner: Accord

The Accord beefed up its roof in its final model year to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating once again, and it comes with a stellar safety score. The Camry's redesign brought a welcome boost of safety, but it still comes up slightly short of the Accord.

2013

Camry: 94.0 points

Accord: 98.0 points

Winner: Accord

The Accord's redesign made it all but perfect in crash testing, save for a four-star rating for both occupants in the NHTSA front test.

2014

Camry: 96.5 points (models built after Dec. 2013; for early-2014 models, see 2013)

Accord: 98.0 points

Winner: Accord, slightly

The Camry bumps up to an Acceptable on the IIHS small overlap.

2015

Camry: 97.0 points

Accord: 98.0 points

Winner: Accord, slightly (effectively a draw)

The Camry bumps up to a Good in the IIHS small overlap, but still performs a hair worse than the Accord in this test, with an Acceptable structural sub-rating. The Camry does offer some accident avoidance features for this year the Accord wouldn't offer until 2016, effectively making this year a draw.

2016

Camry: 97.0 points

Accord: 98.0 points

Winner: Accord, slightly

The Accord gets the Honda Sensing suite of accident-avoidance features, matching the Camry in this area. With ever-so-slightly better crash test ratings, the Accord maintains its slight lead.

2017

Camry: 97.0 points

Accord: 98.0 points

Winner: Accord, slightly

See 2016.

2018

Camry: 99.9 points

Accord: 100.0 points

Winner: Accord, but it's honestly just splitting hairs at this point

Both got redesigns for 2018, and both got perfect crash test ratings and offer a host of advanced crash-avoidance features. In the passenger-side small overlap crash test, the Accord's passenger dummy was slightly better controlled than the Camry's, giving the Accord a tiny lead. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either of these. I've given the Camry a 99.9 score to emphasize just how close these two are.
